LRHC Launches Postpartum Alert Initiative to Improve Maternal Safety

Lexington Regional Health Center (LRHC) is proud to announce its participation in the Nebraska Perinatal Quality Improvement Collaborative’s (NPQIC) Postpartum Alert Initiative, a statewide effort to reduce maternal mortality and improve postpartum care across Nebraska.

This initiative brings together LRHC’s Labor and Delivery Team Obstetrics , Family Medicine Specialists Clinic, Emergency Department, Lexington’s EMS teams, and local clinics to implement a visual alert system designed to identify and support postpartum patients during the critical six weeks following hospital discharge.

As part of the initiative, nurses will provide teal wristbands and education about maternal postpartum warning signs to postpartum patients at discharge. These wristbands serve as a visual cue to all healthcare providers—whether in the clinic, emergency room, or ambulance—that the patient is within the postpartum window and may require specialized, OB-specific urgent care. Patient education ensures patients are aware of what signs and symptoms to be aware of and to seek immediate medical attention.

“This initiative is about saving lives through awareness and timely care,” said Emily Tvrdy, RN-BSN, IBCLC, Nursing Director of Obstetrics at LRHC. “The teal wristband is a simple but powerful tool that helps ensure every provider who interacts with a postpartum patient is aware of their status and can respond appropriately. We’re proud to be part of this collaborative effort to improve maternal outcomes in our community and across the state.”

The Postpartum Alert Initiative is part of a broader commitment by Nebraska hospitals to enhance maternal safety through education, communication, and coordinated care. All implementation materials, including wristbands and multilingual educational resources, are provided at no cost to participating facilities.
