“Food is the most abused anxiety drug. Exercise is the most underutilized antidepressant.”
Stress and its companion, anxiety, push people towards overeating, especially when it comes to high-fat, sugary, or highly processed “comfort foods.” In the short term, these foods do seem to help us to feel better. However, we tend to turn to food to make us feel better more and more often, rather than taking steps to change what is stressing us or turning to other methods to reduce stress and anxiety.
Research shows that exercise is an effective form of treatment for stress, anxiety, and depression. Consistent, sustainable exercise programs result in many health benefits, including protecting against heart disease and diabetes, improving sleep, lowering blood pressure, decreasing chronic pain, and improving your mood. Getting started can be difficult, but you don’t have to start going to the gym or running right away. Starting with 5-10 minutes of walking a day, and increasing that time every few days, is a great way to begin.
Physical therapy can help you get moving in the right direction. We are specialists in movement and exercise, and we would be thrilled to instruct and motivate you to reach your goals!
